The Earl
of Dentin excels in his position as Securer of the Realm. But the king’s order
to pluck an orphaned child from a loving home unsettles Dentin. When a
dark-eyed woman challenges his honor regarding the mission, Dentin finds
himself unable to justify his actions or get her out of his mind. Something
about her lack of fear intrigues him.
Lady Elsa Reeve attempts to avoid the marriage of convenience her brother and mother demand of her. She understands the need to pay off her brother's massive debt. She only wants her family to consider her wishes in the process.

With a murderer on the loose, Elsa’s fate in jeopardy, and a traitor plotting against the king, Dentin finds his priorities shifting in an unexpected direction.

I
tried to smile warmly, but the movement pulled at my face strangely. “I won’t
bite.”
She
glanced at my face, disbelief raw in her gaze. But, she accepted my offering
and sat.
I
reclaimed my own place, occupying my hands with my goblet once again.
Avoiding
looking her way lest I spook her, I traced the design in the metal with my
thumb. “I need to know more about Lander.”
“Why?”
“I am to
be his foster guardian.” I risked a peek her way. Her brows were gathered in
thought. Her slender fingers traced the weave of the cloth on the table.
“Then
the rumors were true.” She straightened. “Will Darnay be fostering with you as
well?”
I
hadn’t thought of that. “Possibly.”
“What
do you need to know?”
“His
habits, likes, and dislikes. I know little about caring for children.”
“Surely
your staff will see to those things.”
“I
have made no arrangements.” I glanced her way. Lips pursed in thought, she now
leaned forward slightly. I had snagged her interest. I floundered for a way to
keep her engaged. “I have never fostered a lad before.”
