Book Synopsis:
Sydney lives her
nightmares every night. While other teenagers are dreaming of boys or traveling
to exotic places, she must run a staircase with no beginning or no end, or a
terrible debt will never be paid.
Just before her
seventeenth birthday, the dreams change. She is no longer alone.
But her nightmares
don’t end when she wakes up. Her stepmother and stepsisters threaten to ruin
everything she holds dear. She must protect the secret that both she and her
father have magic or they will use it to their advantage.
As Sydney learns to
control her magic, what seemed impossible before—escaping her stepmother and
those ever-present stairs—is now at her fingertips. When she learns the
ultimate plan of her evil captor, Sydney must stop her at all costs, or she
will forever be trapped inside her nightmares.
Excerpt One:
Dad came to my room to say good-bye
before he left. He promised that everything would be perfect and he’d be back
as soon as he could. What he didn't see were the looks of death I was getting
from Julie and her daughters, who were standing behind him.
As soon as he was out of sight, they
all turned on me. Julie ordered me to repaint Kaylee’s room and give Sarah a
manicure. I kept silent, hoping the days would fly so I could get to my party.
Unfortunately, time didn’t obey, and seemed to drag on forever.
I was also ordered to clean the entire
house from top to bottom before I could go to bed. ... I just kept telling
myself that all the cleaning was to help my dad, and not because Julie made me
do it.
It was past midnight when Julie finally
gave up making me use toothpicks to clean out the edges of the stove and around
the tile. She sent me to bed with a promise that I would be doing the same
thing the next day.

Sydney doesn’t
know which is worse, when she’s awake and dealing with her stepsisters and
stepmothers, or when she’s sleeping and dealing with her dreams. She just wants to be a
normal teenage girls, but most girls aren’t forced to run stairs
every night or learning magic. She loves school and wants to make a difference
in the world. She just needs to stay awake long enough to do it.
Luke has worked hard to
be who his father wants him to be. When he sees Sydney the first time, he knows
she’s the one. But for more reasons than you’d
expect. He loves sports and having fun with his friends. He’s a
protecter at heart and will do anything to keep Sydney safe.
Sydney’s
dad, Alex, would do anything for his daughter. He lost his wife years before
and doesn’t want to lose his daughter. When she starts having nightmares
every night, he’s willing to go to any length to help rid her of these unnatural
dreams. He has a secret he can’t tell his daughter, no matter how much he’d
like to—especially when she doesn’t understand why she can’t
travel with him.
Jade is a free spirit
who meets Sydney on the way to camp. Her mom works as a counselor, which Jade
enjoys because at home, she doesn’t have much time with
her. Being the youngest of several siblings tends to make her feel a little
invisible. Thank heavens she has great friends at camp to keep her company and
treat her as an equal.
