The Ten Books That Made Me
Want To Become A Writer (In No Particular Order)
1.
Dracula by Bram Stoker
This was the first book that had me
thinking, “I want to do that!” I
remember getting chills while reading the book, never before realizing that
little marks on a page could evoke a physical reaction. I just had to do the
same thing to others.
2.
A Walk Among the Tombstones by Lawrence Block
My first detective novel. This book
taught me a thousand different things about writing all at once and in a
blinding flash. I was blown away.
3.
Misery by Stephen King
Stephen King is one of my greatest
influences. This book gave me a glimpse into the writer’s process (while
telling a terrifyingly awesome story along the way). Another “I want to do
that” kind of book.
4.
Watchers by Dean Koontz
Suspense and deep characterization
melded to perfection.
5.
Writing the Novel
by Lawrence Block
Another fascinating look into the
writer’s process. I still refer back to this book for a refresher when it comes
to my own writing. I was lucky enough to discover this one very early on in
life.
6.
Storm Front by Jim Butcher
My first exposure to urban fantasy. A
mix of fantasy/horror and the detective novel. Two of my favorite genres mixed
into one. Love it.
7.
L.A. Requiem by Robert Crais
A brilliant crime novel that brought a
good, but standard detective series to a whole new level of greatness. Anyone
writing thrillers will learn a great deal by studying this one.
8.
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
My first exposure to Bradbury. The man
is a genius. Every story of his bursts with creative energy.
9.
Dark Thoughts On Writing by Stanley Wiater
A massive collection of bits of advice
and quotes from the best practitioners of dark fiction. There are all sorts of
gems waiting to be found in this book.
10.
Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury
A collection of essays on writing with
as much verve and energy found in his best fiction. And another window into a
writer’s process that will leave any writer pumped to tackle their own stories.

5 Things I Learned Publishing My First Book
1.
First Books Suck. Get over it
I
finished my first book more than 7 years before I actually submitted it to an
editor. Those years were spent doing countless revisions and changes. Did that
make the book perfect? Of course not. There’s no such thing as a perfect book.
I should have submitted it much earlier. In those seven years I could have
written dozens of books. There is no substitute for the experience of finishing
and promoting my first book. With each book I learned more. If I could travel
back in time I would publish faster.
Many
author makes the mistake of comparing their first book to masterpieces. Sure,
some writers publish fantastic works the first time out. For most, mastering an
art requires many years of practice. So stop expecting your first book to be
perfect and just get on to the second book. Then the third.
2.
Get Qualified Editors
I’ve
worked with several editors. Some were good. Others were horrible. The problem
is how can you tell if your editor is qualified? Remember, anyone can call
themselves an editor. Sorry, but having a degree in English means nothing. And
what are the odds you’ll find a freelancer with a university degree in editing
willing to work for peanuts. So get references. Lots of them. Look for which
books they’ve worked on and make sure the end products are decent. Anyone can
get their friends to write up nice reviews. Trust no one and double check.
3.
Self publishing is a small business.
You
have to treat every expense as a cost/benefit relationship. Readers will notice
spelling and grammar problems. But will excellent editing make your book a best
seller? Probably not. The same goes for cover art. You absolutely need to get
professional work done in both cases but that doesn’t mean you need to spend
thousands of dollars. In fact, spending thousands of dollars on either is just
plain silly. If you want to spend money on anything, hire someone to help you
with promotion. Blog tours will give you more bang for your buck than the best
cover artist in the world.
4.
Be Realistic
Some
people seem to think all they need to do is publish one book and then relax as
they earn millions. Not quite. In fact, most indie authors sell an average of
100 books across the entire life of the book. On top of that, other research
suggests most than half of indie writers make less than $500 a year from their
writing. So what does this mean? It means if you want to be a millionaire,
writing is not how you should be spending your time. From an hourly basis,
you’ll make more money as an accountant. Write because it is your passion.
Write because you have a story only you can tell. Your odds of being the next
JK Rowling or Stephen King are on par with winning the lottery.
5.
Keep Writing
I’ve
seen many authors finish one book and then spend the next several years
promoting it. However, most writers only find success after writing several
books. I mean a lot of books. Upwards of 60. The worst thing you can do is try
to rest on your laurels after one book. If you ever hope to get there you need
to write every day.

Three favorite quotes and why under each
quote.
“There are three rules for writing a
novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”
― W. Somerset Maugham
― W. Somerset Maugham
This quote makes me
laugh every time. I always read the first part, and I’m like, ‘Oh, right? Three
rules, yes. What are they then?!’ And then I read the second sentence, and I
think, ‘Oh …’ What I really love about this quote, though, is the complete
freedom it poses for a writer.
“None of us really changes over time.
We only become more fully what we are.”
― Anne Rice, The Vampire Lestat
― Anne Rice, The Vampire Lestat
I love this
one because I don’t take the first part literally. I think we do change; I’ve
always believed in people’s capacity to change. But I also take the second half
of the quote to mean that we learn from our mistakes and experiences, and we discover
our own truths as we go through life. If we’ve made mistakes and suffered from
them, then that suffering will hopefully point us closer to who we really are.
“Here’s to books, the cheapest
vacation you can buy.”

It’s just funny, and true. And I love

About the Author
Shane KP O'Neill is the writer of The Dracula Chronicles, a new and exciting series adding a fresh dimension to the Dracula legend, which combines the real historical Vlad Dracula with a new and different version of Dracula the vampire. He has released the series in two arcs, one that follows Dracula the man and the other following Dracula the vampire. The author developed a fascination with Dracula from an early age. Like many others he was enthralled by Christopher Lee's portrayal of him on the big screen. It was in his late teens that he discovered Dracula the man and the love affair began from there. An avid lover of history, he studied the period in which the real historical Vlad Dracula lived, 15th Century Balkan, for many years. It followed from there then that with his love of writing he would always choose Dracula as his subject. He built a concept and premise where he could accommodate both Dracula the vampire and Dracula the man. Away from writing, the author has a wide range of interests. He reads a lot of books from a wide variety of authors, hough his main interest lies in the horror genre. His love of books is matched only by his love of the countryside and of course, his family. As an added note, he has lived and travelled all over the world. He has a love for all things historical, with a particular fascination for medieval Europe. Anywhere he travels, he likes to search out locations with an historical interest and will always hunt for the ruins of an old castle before heading to the beach.Facebook // Twitter // Goodreads // Website

Can you tell us about yourself?
- For about 10 years before writing novels I dabbled with screenplays. I always
got excited when a well-known actor or actress read my material, but after a
dismal time trying to attract an agent I gave up. Then came the workplace
accident that left me disabled. With depression ripping me apart I decided to
write about my feelings and from that was born the Luna Series.
What do you do when you are not writing?
- Walking the beach searching for fossils, or just meandering with my wife
mulling over a new novel. Then it’s back to marketing like a crazy monkey.
When did you first start writing and when did you finish
your first book? Nearly 13 years ago now, but not
seriously until 2012 when a publisher accepted my madcap comedy novel about
Bigfoot. From that book came my Teen Phantom Bigfoot Series.
Where do you get your ideas?
Lucky me has 22 screenplays which will all become novels. My ideas come from TV
shows such as Star Trek and SG-1 and my dreams along with my wife’s input too.
Is
there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either
growing up or as an adult? As a youngster it was Alistair
MacLean, later Stephen King, Graham Masterton and Anne Rice were a driving
influence.
Is
there a special ritual or place that you write?
I am forced to write in the darn kitchen which as you can imagine is not the
best place for peace and quiet.
You've been given the task to host a
last minute dinner party. Which authors
are on your ultimate dinner invitation list? Alive or Dead. Stephen King, Anne Rice, Philip K Dick, Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle, Dean Koontz and Graham Masterton.

THE LONG WAY DOWN by Craig Schaefer Release Date: 2014 The death of a porn star leads sorcerer Daniel Faust down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and madness. For the first time, black magic and bullets might not be enough to save him from the brink of damnation.
~Synopsis ~
Nobody knows the seedy underbelly of Las Vegas like Daniel Faust, a sorcerer for hire and ex-gangster who uses black magic and bullets to solve his clients' problems. When an old man comes seeking vengeance for his murdered granddaughter, what looks like a simple job quickly spirals out of control.
Soon Daniel stands in the crossfire between a murderous porn director; a corrupt cop with a quick trigger finger; and his own former employer, a racket boss who isn't entirely human. T hen there's Caitlin: brilliant, beautiful, and the lethal right hand of a demon prince.
A man named Faust should know what happens when you rub shoulders with demons. Still Daniel can't resist being drawn to Caitlin's flame as they race to unlock the secret of the Etruscan Box, a relic that people all over town are dying -- and killing -- to get their hands on. As the bodies drop and the double-crosses pile up, Daniel will need every shred of his wits, courage and sheer ruthlessness just to survive.
Daniel Faust knew he was standing with one foot over the brink of hell. He's about to find out just how far he can fall.
About the Author
By the time he was four years old, Craig Schaefer knew he wanted to be a writer. He also wanted to be an astronaut, a private eye, and a fire truck, so nobody paid much attention. Other passions came and went with age, but the love of writing remained. He cut his teeth on the crime thrillers of Elmore Leonard and Richard Stark, which may explain a thing or two about the person he is today. Exploring other genres he soon latched onto horror and weird fiction, falling hard for the worlds of Clive Barker and H.P. Lovecraft. The books of the Daniel Faust series are written in honor of all the writers who shaped him, blending gangsters, guns and black magic in a manner not unlike, he hopes, chocolate and peanut butter. Research for the Faust novels has led Craig down some curious alleys -- sometimes literally -- and to conversations with interesting and occasionally frightening people. His reference bookshelf, stocked with tomes covering the spectrum from criminology to demonology, has been variously described as "disturbing," "a bit eccentric," and "the reason I'm not dating that guy anymore." While he considers Las Vegas his second home and visits every chance he gets, Craig presently lives in Joliet, Illinois, the home of the Blues Brothers. He dwells in what was once a turn of the century convent, though he has never seen the alleged (and obligatory) ghostly nuns. The pipes do rattle in the night, though, and if you're standing in just the right spot, they sound like the pitter-patter of children's feet rushing by on the floor just above you. When he's not behind the keyboard, he can be found visiting Chicago's historic museums, haunting libraries for inspiration, and spending too much time gaming while he should be writing. He also dabbles in sleight of hand, though unlike Daniel Faust, he's not very good at it.
Ten Pieces of Advice I Would Tell my
Teenaged Self
1.
If you can get past chapter ten, you can finish the book. Stop
half-assing your manuscripts and learn to go the distance. Discipline is the
number-one habit, tool and ally of a working writer.
2. Stop throwing out your writing. You’ll
want all that stuff someday.
3. On that note, boy, are you gonna
wish you’d bagged up those old comic books and kept them pristine.
4. Kiss the girl. Kiss the guy, too.
Why not?
5. As a teenager, you have a
metabolism that allows you to eat cows – entire, actual cows – without gaining
a single pound. Enjoy it. You’re going to miss it when it’s gone.
6. Pay more attention in math class.
It’ll be more useful than you think.
7. In retrospect, you won’t believe
how dorky you look in those clothes. It’s okay, though, everyone else does too.
8. Heartbreak will be the keenest pain
you ever feel, but love is always worth the risk. Always.
9. Those guys at Apple might just be
onto something. Maybe you should buy some stock. Just saying.
10. Relax. The future is AWESOME.

Character
casting
I love this game! Here’s my personal casting for Blackjack
the movie…
Humans
Vincent – Jonathan Rhys Meyers
He has the cocky youth to meet the needs
of Vincent. His work in 6 Souls nailed this casting for me.
Carmen – Stana Katic
SO…. Maybe I have a slight crush on her,
she’s a strong and beautiful actress. Simply perfect for the strong and gentle
Carmen.
Terry – Viggo Mortensen
Frankly, he should be in nearly
everything, but his confidence and strength will play Terry without question.
William – Michael Caine
Who doesn’t love Michael Caine?! Perfect class and father
figure needed for this role.
Edward – John Hurt
John Hurt, there are so many good things
to say about him! He is a chameleon but always has this edge to him.
Lycans
Johnny – Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Play and pretty enough to be Johnny.
Michael – Dominic Purcell
Michael was one of the harder characters
to cast. Honestly, it was hard to pick someone that held that primal strength
that make Michael who he is.
Vampires
Amun – Michael Wincott
It’s his voice! Dark and deadly. Who else could portray such
a master vampire?
Seth – Sendhil Ramamurthy
Again, the voice! I loved the episodes of
Heroes that he would narrate. The cadence and tone feel so full of wisdom.
Alexander – Ray Stevenson
Loved this dude since Rome! THIRTEEN!!! Helps he’d be playing
a Roman aged vampire.
Tarja – Lena Headey
By far Tarja was the hardest to cast. I
needed a woman with power and grace that age couldn’t touch. I needed a queen.
Thanks for sharing THE SHADOW BOX!
