Going once...going twice...and the irresistible Anna Karenina goes to...
When Brett Montgomery is forced to attend a New Year's Eve charity event for his law firm, he is deliciously surprised to learn that the Irresistible Women in History Auction has been organized and hosted by the woman he desired more than any other during his college years. Beautiful, sexy, and seemingly immune to his charms, Anna was the only woman to refuse him, and the only one he wanted to claim. Finding her again, posing as the alluring Anna Karenina, he wins her for the night. But that's not enough. They share many of the same passions in life and love, and Brett is determined that he'll have no other woman by his side.
Anna Cosgrove has spent her life helping others. She is a giver, a self-sacrificing champion of great and humanitarian causes. She's pledged to help her best friend in his mayoral pursuits by posing as his fiancée and marrying him. In return, he'll give her the greatest gift she could ever hope for before her time runs out. But when her old college crush attends her charity event to fight for her hand, and wins, she decides to give in to her own desires. For one night, she will be his. When the morning comes and she must say goodbye, she realizes that her one night of selfishness has cost more than she bargained for. Her heart.
The pieces are set. The stakes are high. There is more to lose than gain. Should they risk moving forward? Or leave their hearts and wishes behind in the place where they shared something magical, where they embraced A Night To Remember...
R.C. Matthews was raised in the Metro-Detroit area along with three sisters and a brother by deaf parents. Her father is a voracious reader and that gene lives on in all of his children. Now the reading gene is sprouting in her own two sons who love to read J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan and may others. In fact, R.C. Matthews plans to try her hand at writing a teen fantasy fiction based on her son's favorite board game Talisman ... someday.
R.C. Matthews graduated from a liberal arts college with a B.A. in Accounting and German and continues to work as a certified public accountant. She lived for four years in Germany and two years in Boston, MA. and she enjoys traveling with her family (loving husband, two sons and a stepson), reading, down-hill skiing and playing board games with her family.
Thank you for taking time to answer my questions!
1.) So can you tell us how you came up with the idea for
this book? The Title?
It’s actually a pretty long story how I came up with this
idea so I’ll try to be brief. This book started out as a short story of only
10,000 words that I was writing for an anthology of “New Year’s Eve” stories
for a publisher. I started thinking about what people do on New Year Eve. Go to
a party, right? But I wanted my party to be special. And I’ve always loved the
idea of writing a historical romance, but I don’t have the patience to do the
research. So I came up with the idea of a charity auction of bachelorette’s
dressed as famous women in literary history. This way I got to write about
walzing and gorgeous dresses. The original story ended at Chapter Five. As I
was waiting for the publisher to make a decision on whether they wanted the
short story for their anthology, the Harlequin So You Think You Can Write
contest started. I joined in 2013 and had a blast doing it. So I decided to
expand A Night To Remember to a full novel to participate in SYTYCW 2014. I
wrote 40,000 words in ten days. Crazy!!!! But sometimes my best work is done
under pressure. I hope everyone who reads A Night To Remember will agree. The
title was easy because that New Year’s Eve night was so special to Anna and
Brett that they would remember it forever.
2.) Who is your favorite character in this book and why?
This is a kind of a mean question. How am I supposed to
pick when I love them all? But if I have to choose, then I’m going to pick
Brett, the hero in my story, because he is super sexy and confident, yet
vulnerable when it comes to Anna. Everything has come easy to him in his life
except for winning the hand of Anna. So I was really rooting for him throughout
the whole story.
3.) Is this book different from the others you have written
in the past? If so how?
A Night To Remember is different from my other contemporary
romance novels in that it is steamier. Anna and Brett really go at it in this
book but I hope the readers will agree the sex scenes are not gratuitus, but
rather, move the story along and build on their relationship. This book is also
somewhat different in that one of the secondary characters, Jorge, plays a
large role in the book. I was as invested in his story as I was in Anna’s and
Brett’s story. In fact, a publisher wanted to publish A Night To Remember as a
novella by cutting out Jorge but I couldn’t do it. I love his character and his
story.
4.) What is your favorite genre to write and why?
I’m a sucker for contemporary romance that is
light-hearted, humorous and leaves you feeling good. I know that books full of
angst and turmoil are all the rage right now, but I personally limit the number
of books that I read which rip my heart out because reading is for pleasure.
And I don’t like to have my heart ripped out at the end of a long day of work.
But I do love a good laugh, feeling happy and feeling in love.
5.) Does your family and friends read your book?
My three sisters have read all of my books, but they can’t
agree on which one they love best. I recently let my mother read my Wish Come
True series because there is limited sex in that series, so it wasn’t as
awkward as it could have been if she read A Night To Remember which is very
steamy. My best friend is one of my best beta readers. She does a fabulous job
of giving me high level feedback on what did or did not work for her in the
story. I almost always make edits based on her advice.
6.) What are you currently working on? Do you have a
release date yet? Title?
I’m currently working on two projects. One is an Erotic
story called Make Me Whole. I’m in the editing phase right now. It is very
different than my standare fare. I usually write “feel good” books but this one
is darker and full of angst with a shocking ending. I’m going to use a
different pen name, K.M. Matthews, because I don’t want to confuse my readers. I
wrote it because I wanted to challenge myself but I don’t know if I’ll ever do
it again. I balled my eyes out writing the last chapter – definitely ripped my
heart out. Never again!!! Hopefully it will be out in March or April of 2015.
My second project is a teen fastasy book called Infinitas the I’m writing for
my twelve year old son. That will be published under the pen name David N.
Sebastian (my sons are David and Sebastian) hopefully in February 2015.
7.) What inspired you to become an author?
I’ve always enjoyed writing from a very young age. In my
college years I fell in love with romance novels and kept saying I would write
one someday. I started Little White Lies when I was 27 years old but never
finished it because life happened – marriage – kids – career. One day I
realized I was over forty and “that day” had not yet come. So I decided to pick
up my incomplete manuscript and finish the book. The rest is history. Once I
started, I could not stop. The ideas won’t get out of my head.
8.) Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in the Metro-Detroi area and was raised by deaf
parents along with my siblings (three sisters and a brother). Although I
considered a career in journalism, the pragmatic side of me chose to become an
accountant because that seemed like a secure route with a high paying job. I’ve
lived in Germany and Boston but came back to my roots in 2003 and have lived
here since. I have two sons and a step-son through my second marriage. My
husband is wondful and supportive. Funny that I met him through an internet
dating site – which inspired my book “Date Night”. I love to read as much as I
love to write and always share my thoughts on books that I’ve read on
Goodreads.
